Insurance companies don’t provide a reason as they typically state “ Based on Our Guidelines, we’re unable to insure the smaller bikes”. However, once we looked deeper into this issue, we learned it’s not the bike that is a concern, It’s the rider. The accident benefits claims associated with younger riders could go to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Insurance companies naturally would want to stay away from these claims specially when they’re only earning under $200 ( estimate ) per year per bike. It’s simply not profitable. At least that’s what we think.
On certain models, specially motocross/dirt bikes, physical damage coverage is not available depending on the insurance provider.
Typically anything under $120 Per year for basic liability coverage and under $240 per year for a comprehensive package which includes collision, fire, theft and more. Snowmobiles are roughly around the same, but depending on location and age, it could be a little higher. The average premiums provided are as of Jan 2024.
Ontario’s Standard Accident Benefits are included in all auto policies.
You need to check with your local authority, but to the best of our knowledge, if it’s not your own property, you’re required to carry insurance on trails in Ontario. You may also ride without insurance on private property if you have their consent to do so.
There are certain scenarios where some insurance providers can insure the ATV for theft only under property insurance with special endorsements. However, typically Home insurance does not provide coverage for ATV.
